How to Sing in Front of an Audience

I love to sing and one thing that always gives me a rush is when I sing in front of an audience. I also am of the opinion that most people who sing and who are told that they are a good singer, will also like to share their voice with an audience.

But that does not mean that these people that sing in public don’t get nervous. In fact many singers will feel jittery or even anxious before they go on stage. But with more practice and with more experience of singing in public, these nerves will go away or at least abate.

When I was growing up, I was always a member of the school choir because I loved to sing. And sometimes, we as a choir would perform songs in front of parents and teachers. I absolutely loved to do this. The thrill of singing on a stage with the stage lighting and a piano or orchestra in the background was addictive. I loved to sing in the choir, but I found that when I first sang on my own, without the rest of my choir I would get extremely nervous.

The first time I sang in public was in a karaoke restaurant. I was only about 14 years old at the time. I knew that I had a pleasant voice and I knew that I could sing in tune, but I was still nervous and found myself shaking from the nerves.

But since then, if the opportunity presented itself, I would relish the opportunity to share my voice and my interpretation of the song that I was singing. Since then I have sung many times at karaoke in restaurants and even in a large casino in my home town.

Following are five easy tips that will get you on the road to singing in front of an audience. It sounds easy to do but I can assure you that nerves can get the better of many singers. Even seasoned performers still get nervous. So don’t feel as if you are alone.

Now, onto my pro tips…

Tip 1: Practice

There are two forms of practice that I am talking about. One is to practice singing the song you are singing and the other form of practice is to practice in front of an audience. This second form of practice is what I am talking about.

The best thing I found that always helped me to increase my confidence in singing publicly was to invite people that I am close with to a karaoke party. If you have a karaoke machine at home, then you can invite friends or relatives to your home and sing the night away.

If you don’t have a karaoke machine, you can still book a room at a karaoke club. When I was studying, I went many times to karaoke clubs with my friends. At the club, you are given a room which has sofas and a big TV screen. You are given a booklet of songs with many different types of genres and you can choose whatever song is in the booklet to be played. Then when the song comes on the screen, there are lyrics that you follow at the bottom of the screen. And you just sing to the lyrics.

It is not as confronting as singing on a stage because firstly, you are singing with your friends or family, so you feel comfortable with them. Also, when you are singing karaoke, everyone is looking at the screen and not at you. So you will most likely be able to control your nerves.

But the more you sing in public, the more your confidence will grow. Another place where I sang karaoke was in some local pubs. I didn’t have to look into an audience because I could look into a TV screen, singing to the lyrics.

The next stage in increasing your confidence will be to sing to an audience, where all eyes are looking at you on that stage. If you practice singing karaoke enough, then this next stage of singing to the watchful eye of an audience will give you more experience which means more confidence which in turn means less nerves.

2 ) Prepare Before You Go on Stage

Before you go on stage, you will need to learn to control your nerves. Try closing your eyes and do some breathing techniques. For instance, breath in for five seconds and feel your diaphragm fill with air. Then blow out this air, counting five seconds again. Do this enough and only concentrate on your breath. Do not think about the audience or your singing. By concentrating on your breath, you will take your mind off the performance and hopefully, you will feel less anxious.

Also do your usual warm up exercises and drink warm water to moisten your throat.

3) Practice Your Good Posture.

When you have good posture, you will be able to sing more freely and this means you will hit all your high notes and have the breath to hit the low notes. You will also feel taller and this will bring about more confidence which means you will feel less nervous and this will help you give a more strong and pleasant performance.

4) See Yourself Singing in Front of a Smiling and Cheering Crowd.

When you see this in your mind, you will feel less jittery and this will help you give a great performance. When you find yourself slipping back into nerves while you are singing, just close your eyes, feel the music and imagine this crowd of people smiling and cheering you on! It is Ok to close your eyes every once in a while. You might find that people will find you confronting if you close your eyes throughout your whole performance but if you only do this a few times during your song, then that is all right.

5) Choose Your Song Choice Wisely.

If you choose a challenging song for example a song with a lot of high notes, and you are not accustomed to singing that high, then you will most likely feel the nerves even more than if you had chosen an easy song to sing.

When you are singing alone with no other singers to hide behind, then you need to choose songs that are easily in your vocal range. The song should be easy for you to sing. This means that you won’t be worrying about how you are going to hit those high notes. You will be more relaxed because you know you can sing that song. In turn, you will be less nervous and will give a great performance.

I hope that you gain the confidence to sing in public because I know firsthand how much of a thrill it is to sing in front of an audience. It is a big rush when you finish your song and the audience is clapping for you.
