How to Improve Your Tone

Having a nice tone will make your audience appreciate your singing. It is possible to improve your tone and this can apply to novices or experienced singers.

Here are some tips that can help you improve your tone:

  1. Warm up your voice before your performance.

I am sure that you have heard your voice in the morning when you have just woken up! It might sound a bit croaky and like you have a soar throat. This can also happen when you are just about to sing. So an important way to improve your tone would be to warm up your voice before you sing. Things like singing scales up and down will help to warm up your voice which leads to a better tone when you perform

2) Drink water before you perform.

I am sure that you have heard that eating chocolate or drinking milk before a performance can hinder your voice. It is best to just drink pure water before you sing. This will help with your tone. Other things like chocolate, milk or alcohol and hinder your tone. So for your best sounding tone, just drink water. Another alternative is to drink some honey in warm water. This will help to lubricate your vocal cords so that your your tone will come out smoothly

3) Practice Breathing Properly

If you want to sing at your ultimate best, you need to breath properly. When you inhale air, your stomach should get bigger. This is because you are breathing in air and filling your stomach with air. When you breath out, this air will be blowing out so your stomach should do the opposite and get smaller. Try to keep the rest of your body still when you are doing these exercises. Only your stomach should be moving. And your shoulders and chest should especially be kept still.

4) Allow the air to flow through to your vocal cords.

You can do this by keeping your head straight. So when you breath in, the air will flow to your vocal cords and your tone will come out the best. Even tilting your head slightly can affect your tone, so it is best to keep your head straight on your shoulders. You can definitely benefit by keeping good posture.

5) Keep your mouth open wide when you sing and rest your tongue.

By opening your mouth wide when you sing, you can help to pronounce your words or lyrics properly so that your audience can clearly hear what you are singing. And keeping your mouth open wide will also improve your tone. You should be able to fit two fingers into your mouth when you are singing for optimum tone. And your tongue should be resting at the bottom of your mouth so that it doesn’t block the air flow to your vocal cords.

Try all these tips to help improve your tone. Over time, you will see improvements and your tone will gradually get better. If you are performing in front of an audience, try resting your vocal cords in the day or two before your performance and then do warm ups before you sing. You will soon be able to perform in front of an audience and share your voice with the world.
